Train

A lovely picture book that is well laid out. I liked the little shadows under each train against the white page to add a sense of weight. I did this on the 10 inch tablet and the print was just big enough for these old eyes, so wouldn't recommend the digital version on anything smaller. The layout is retained from the print book so you can't pop out the pictures to full screen, but pinching and sliding works well enough. Many pages feature half a dozen or more trains with a little heading paragraph about the category and some information about each one. This is more of a picture book than a reference book on these pages which form most of the book. There are expanded sections about individual trains and lines that are quite interesting with a fair amount of text and lots of lovely pictures. This is a take your time book that does require lots of zooming on the digital version. Worth the time and effort for a pleasant experience.

DK is notorious for the high quality visual guide in several subjects - it means the main message is given by high quality printed images. This book isn't an exception: the images will talk the history by themselves - it is an Historical Visual Guide to trains! There are lots of color images and schematics including particular details that is the second best thing after to have the actual machines available for your explorations. There is a small section at the end of the book with a technical overview on tracks, brakes and engines. The texts complement cleverly the great images.Highly recommended if you are interested on trains.

This is a book for adults but our five-year-old grandson is obsessed by trains, and this is an amazingly comprehensive and visually beautiful book which he will enjoy for years. He never gets tired of having it read to him and the pictures are beautiful. From the Smithsonian Museum, this book should delight the enthusiast. I’m super glad I found it for him. He stopped opening gifts to “read” this book. Enough said.

I got this book for my dad for his birthday. He loves it! It is a gorgeous book. The photos are vibrant and colorful. It’s also a lot bigger than I expected! Which is great! He can’t wait to read it. He’s starting to get more into collecting train stuff and building a setup in his basement. So this is perfect for him to reference! Definitely recommend!

This book has awesome pictures. I've been reading with my son, and we love trains. He has some tracks and toy engines. I like history, we both love pictures. I didn't realize how cool trains were until I read this. I knew they kind of cool, but this book really gets into details about specifics, which would be boring, except for the photographs and pictures on every single page. I would be surprised if someone could pick this book up and NOT find something they liked and were able to read about it in 5 or less minutes. Which brings me to my last point; the way the chapters are laid out allows you to invest very little time yet learn a lot.

An extensive study, and beautifully done! I highly recommend! I purchased this gift for my brother, who, like me, is a train enthusiast. Our dad worked as agent and telegrapher for the Erie (then Erie Lackawanna before Conrail stepped in), so trains are "in our blood"! The only disappointment was in the shipping--box too big, little padding, and the dust cover slipped and was wrinkled badly, as was a corner bent...too bad...the 5 stars remain for the book itself!

ANY DK book is worth picking up. The pictures and layouts are spectacular. I would have liked to see this split into 2 volumes: Steam deserves it's own book. Could use more of a Global approach. I want to see more Military uses. What was Russia or China's evolution of these majestic beasts? Japan, India... Don'the get me wrong here - this is still a fantastic book. It goes well with Automobile and Motorcycle which I also possess.

My friends Caroline and Derrick are British and live in the south of England. Derrick is very enamored of trains. His whole attic was remodeled and it is one big model train extravaganza. He loved the book. By the way, Derrick is 87 and climbs the attic stairs daily to tend to and add to his villages, forests, railroad tracks, and forest models he makes, and adds new tracks, new trains, tunnels, etc. It is a wonder to behold.

Excelente livro em todos os sentidos.

Es un libro hermoso, con ilustraciones y fotografías excelentes. Lleno de historia. Es más grande de lo que imaginaba y eso lo hace mucho más bonito.

Beautiful book!! (And heavy lol - I feel like I got my money's worth!) Big, excellent quality, vibrant colors and LOTS of pictures of REAL trains/engines (not a person's drawings). Hard cover. Bought it for my dad for Xmas and he loved it! It's become their favourite coffee table book. Great buy!! Thanks :)

An instant hit for our retired grandfather. He enjoyed hours of showing pages to his 5yo grandson, reliving railroad memories.

A really nice book but the description states that it comes with 2 collectable prints. There is also a sticker which says '2 collectible prints inside'. Unfortunately the prints were not with the book. It's a gift, so now as soon as he opens it I'll have to explain to the recipient that the prints didn't come. Not too happy about this so only gave it 2 stars.REVISION: I gave this book to my Dad as a birthday gift and apologized for the missing collectible prints. Later that night he emailed me the following:"It was after I had finished the initial browsing and I was closing up the book that I noticed that the back cover seemed to stand off a little from the rest of the book. On investigation I found a pouch on the inside of the back cover. Inside the pouch were the missing collectible prints"For any of the other purchasers who are missing the prints, check the back inside cover of the book. You will find a hidden pocket there and the prints are inside. I am attaching a photo to show the pocket.
